To Recycle or Not Recycle Ideas In Published Works?

So here I am in my car on my Wednesday morning commute, trying something a little bit different. And forgive me if I get a little rambling or off topic, just kind of one of those things, and it seems like this may work out... or it may not work out. But I wanted to talk a little bit about recycling. This idea was prompted by the fact that after my podcast on taking notes, and catching the idea when it is when the Muse strikes, I thought it would be a good idea to go out and buy a standalone voice recorder Well, I found some inexpensive ones, but I'm kind of a cheapskate when it comes to some of that stuff and I couldn't justify spending even $20 for a voice recorder. So for the past week or so I've been just kind of trying to convince myself that I needed to spring for the hardware and then while having a conversation with a friend and hit me, I've got a lot of old technology just sitting around. I've got this recording pen thing and I thought I could use that. I just use the recorder. It wasn't working and I don't know why I didn't think about this at first, but I also have an old iPhone that is just sitting around collecting dust on my nightstand. I occasionally use it to as a soundboard for when I run games. I will use it to control my Bluetooth speaker so that I have other devices free, but for the most part, it just sits dormant. It works perfectly fine without a sim and it can still connect to Wi-Fi.  I just updated the OS so it's pretty functional and new. So why don't I use that? As a result, I am testing out this "new" old piece of tech and doing a Wednesday drive-time Microburst. That also led me to thinking about the idea of recycling things in games.

Now I'm familiar with the quantum ogre and this may kind of seem like that idea, but I'm really more interested in seeing how much can we recycle from a one published product to use in another published product. Is it worth it? Also, I have a lot of stuff that I end up throwing away when I'm working on a project or an adventure or a product that might well fit into another project. So I'm thinking let's go ahead and reuse.

For instance, you have an encounter that wasn't used in one adventure that you could easily move into another adventure if the players never experienced that encounter. They wouldn't be any the wiser. As far as reusing a an idea from one adventure to another, even if it's published, would that be ethical? Would that be smart? Maybe ethical isn't even a question maybe it's just smart? You could reskin something which also leads me to the question of what about reskinning an adventure and republishing the entire adventure? I have [an adventure] actually it's the only real published adventure that I have. It's a space horror, a gothic space horror adventure and a friend of mine has run this and reskinned it not just in space, but he's reskinned it for Rifts. He's reskinned for fantasy I believe. So why, I mean, how would you go about doing that? How could I reskin an adventure? And would it be okay to publish it? or How could I get more mileage out of a single adventure republishing it because sure a lot of good GM would be able to very easily reskin it but what about the people who don't either have the talent or the time or the experience to reskin it? Am I doing them a disservice? Or am I doing them a favor by reskinning the adventure? Call in let me know let's get a conversation going.

Something also occurs to me that the major publishers of adventures have been reusing and recycling material since the very beginning. I think there are three different versions of Keep on the Borderlands all with slightly different material and Wizards has been reusing a lot of the old TSR material, either updating it with some new stuff and new stats, also reissuing old material with new bonus material. Goodman games does that a lot, they will reissue old adventures with bonus material which I think is fantastic idea because it keeps those things fresh and not everybody has seen [some of those older] things. By reissuing it, it gives them an opportunity to re-advertise for those [adventures] and bring [them] to the forefront once again, and maybe give some new life to an old classic. That is extremely valuable.

The more I think about this, the more I think that yeah, this is an okay idea and why not?

Savage Dungeons: Character Attributes

In the game, we need some way of describing your character, the fighter you will pretend to be. We can say the fighter is "strong, fairly nimble, not too smart"— but we need to describe the character a little better than that. We call these descriptions abilities.
-Dungeons & Dragons Players Manual

CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES

The Basic version of the game that I am mostly drawing inspiration from calls these character defining traits abilities. Since Savage Dungeons is a designed for use with Savage Worlds we can refer to these defining traits as attributes.

In Savage Dungeons every Basic Quickdraw Wildcard Character has 3-6 defining "Attributes."

[needle scratch]

WHAT? 3-6? what are you talking about? Savage Worlds has FIVE attributes! (see pg. 16 Savage Worlds Deluxe Edition)

Yes I am aware of the rules as written, but since Savage Dungeons has grown out of my home game which includes children ages 5, 8,10, 22, and "older than 22", I am experimenting with how minimal things can get and still work with Savage Worlds rules as written—remember the monster stat block experiment?  (I've been able to run a game quite well using only one die type to represent all attributes and skills for monsters.)

The basic set of attributes for Savage Dungeons are Strength, Agility, and Smarts. While they are broad categories that cover many different but related aspects of a character,  having only three makes it as easy for young players and extremely new players to keep track of what die they need to roll for a given task.

Strength defines how strong and durable your character is. The attributes of Strength and Vigor are both folded into the Strength attribute. Strength relates to physical actions such as forcing doors, fighting with melee weapons, physical endurance and resisting disease. Strength is the primary attribute for Fighter and Dwarf archetypes.

Agility describes how fast and physically coordinated your character is. Agility is quickness, movement, dexterity, and reflexes. Agility relates to actions such as dodging attacks, sneaking around quietly, picking locks, throwing objects, and shooting weapons. Agility is the primary attribute for the Thief and Halfling archetypes.

Smarts determines how smart, knowledgeable, and likable your character is. This attribute includes both Smarts and Spirit. Smarts relates to solving puzzles, remembering facts, telling convincing lies, using Magic and mental resistance. Smarts is the primary attribute for the Magic-user, Cleric, and Elf archetypes.

Since Savage Dungeons is trying to maintain the feel and flavor of the basic version of the original fantasy RPG, all the archetypes have fixed stats at the start of the game. So far this approach has worked well especially for players coming from a traditional F20 RPG background where the d20 does most of the rolling for attacks and skill checks and the concept of potentially rolling a different die type for each action can be as difficult to grasp as the classical dynamics of spinning tops.

What's your thoughts on this minimalist take on Savage Worlds attributes?

The village hedge mage has lost their familiar and you have managed to track it into to the edge of the Darken Forest on the border of the Savage Marches, a dark and forbidding land. The cat's trail ends at what looks like a badger hole just inside the tree line. The cat's meow can be heard echoing from below...

Add some desert terrain to your encounter!

Maybe you shouldn't have made that left turn in Albuquerque, perhaps you shouldn't have insulted that nicely dressed man in the casino, or perhaps that old silver mine was only a legend after all. However you found yourself in this godforsaken place, you never thought you would be asking yourself, "If a voice cries out in the wilderness and it goes unheard does it make a sound?"
...and what's up with those kids on BMX bikes?

Desert of The Damned includes a full 30 x 35-inch map as well as 11 modular 9-inch hexes featuring the Hexomorfo system.

The printable tiles were designed to be used as print and play or as a complement to the 2.5D tile creation method created by DM Scotty.

Also included are a full set of files for Virtual Tabletops.

A subway station map inspired by Jack Kirby's post-post-apocalyptic comic book, Kamandi the Last Boy on Earth, the Morlock stories from The Uncanny X-Men series from the 80's, a little TMNT adventure I've been toying with for my kids, some Thundaar the Barbarian, Dave Joria's Masters of Umdaar, a bit of the Ghostbusters 2 movie, Matt Jackson's subway map from way back in January, Just Insert Imagination's Mutants & Tassels, and a CoC style horror scenario I've been mulling over.

Free Map Friday - Well of the Ancients

Children of Graystone are missing and the the goblins of Graystone Vale have a secret...

In the village of Graystone there is a story told to little children about goblins who used to steal unruly children in the night, but the events of the past suggest that it is not just a story. First there was the mystery of the dissapearing stockings--every left stocking in the village just vanished overnight, then the sheep started to dissapear, now it's worse, much worse.

Free Map Monday - 51st and 9th

The body in the middle of the street certainly looked like a suicide, "But why would a perfectly healthy young man who just won a full athletic scholarship to the best universitys in the country jump off a building, and what was he doing in this neighborhood?" Before you even ask your next question his skin begins to move and crawl as if trying to free itself from the lifeless corpse, or was it BAM, POW, ZAAAP! "Hahahaha super-fools! You will never defeat me!" The evil Blue Shark launches himself high into the air as his flying robot-squid minions attack, or perhaps it was "Listen, we don't want anyone to get hurt, so just let the hostages go and we'll talk about your demands..." whatever it is, every street corner has a story to tell, what's yours?

Free Map Monday - The Broken Stone Ruins

For as long as anyone can remember these ruins have always been here. For as long as anyone can remember these ruins have always been here. Some say a long dead cult built an altar here to their alien gods, another legend is that it was once part of a larger temple complex that was destroyed eons ago in the great battle of the gods, others say the weathered stone tablet is a doorway to the faerie world carried here and sealed by the ancient druids of the Singing Stones?  Whatever you have been told there are great riches burried beneath the Broken Stone and perhap more, but you have also been warned, "The land is cursed! No one has ever stepped foot on the anabranch of the ruins and returned to tell the tale."

Last month I started a new regular feature for Patreon supporters, the "Living Terrain Tiles" series. "Living Terrain Tiles" use a hex based system that can easily be configured and re-configured into just about any type of terrain that is required for the encounter. This week, while I began to work on some new Tiles for shorelines and rivers, I realized I didn't have any forks for the stream tiles, so I have included them in this weeks creation. I have also added some additional tiles that make it possible to recreate the Broken Stone Ruins as well as the Singing Stones maps using the Living Terrain Tiles. The new tiles include a fork in the stream, 7 new meadow tiles with rock formations, 2 sets of tree tops, and a page of tree trunk texture.

A bundle of deep space horror for the holidays!

Bundle and save 30% on the Adventure and Battlemaps!

Mal Fisher, the Captain of the light freighter Bella LeGosi, claims to know the whereabouts of The Lady of Esparto, an ancient lost ship carrying treasure worth millions, and he is looking to hire a salvage crew. He wants to keep everything off the books as he is operating without the required paperwork. He has chosen not to apply for a salvage license for fear that a treasure as great as the Lady of Esparto will attract too much unwanted attention, increasing the likelihood of claim jumpers, pirates, and crooked authorities looking for an easy buck. He is offering a substantial amount of money and a percentage of the treasure for the completion of the job.

This bundle includes the Savage Worlds adventure and several Sci-Fi modular dungeon tile sets, including grid versions and .jpg files for VTTs.
