The Mad Map March Challenge

The Mad Map March challenge.

I don't normally participate in these internet challenges, mostly because I'm not good at it. I usually fizzle out within a day or two, or I skip a bunch of days and then come back to it [or] eventually just forget about it. I've accepted the Mad Map March challenge, which is creating a different map each day in March, working from a list of prompts. I think this is going to be a very difficult challenge for me.

The first major obstacle in this challenge is going to be the time involved. Because normally I do my map work at lunchtime and generally speaking, it takes about a week of lunches for me to design just one map, and some of that is due to just the process of coming up with the idea or playing with techniques, but in general it takes about five hours or more, sometimes more, to develop a map and because I don't just I'm not just creating a map for use as a key to an adventure, in most cases it's a battle map of some kind and I really enjoy putting a lot of detail—almost telling a story with the map itself. I feel like the map is as much an illustration for the adventure as drawings would be or or painting for a cover and I try to put as much energy into each map as I would an illustration so that that's going to be an obstacle, that's going to be a big obstacle. Working in one fourth or one fifth, the amount of time and trying to come up with a new map every day and completing that map in about an hour is it's going to be a significant challenge.

The other challenge is probably going to be the open ended nature of the prompt. I tend to work a whole lot better when I have more constraints. I play a better character when I have more constraints. I prefer to be given a pre generated character so that I could work within the constraints of what was given to me. Even though a prompt itself has some amount of limits, it's still very open ended. There isn't a lot of description to go on. For instance, day five. Today's prompt was Sea or Lake, "Well, what do you what do you mean 'Sea and Lake'? What are the what are the other rules that govern this creation?" There aren't any [specifics], just whatever your imagination comes up with. Well, hopefully what I come up with is something that everybody likes. Because the other part of this is I want to create something that's useful. I don't just want to create a map for the sake of creating a map or art for the sake of creating art. And because these really are designed to be played on as battle maps, or in virtual table tops, I want people to want to use them in their adventures.

Those are some challenges that I'm going to have to deal with, everything from just my own enthusiasm for the challenge to the time involved, and the level of perfection that I'm going to want versus the level of perfection that I'm going to be able to produce. Hopefully I'm going to learn some new shortcuts and really start to develop some interesting techniques throughout this process as well. really exercise my imagination and and get some new ideas that I didn't have before out and started I Also really hope that I am able to produce quality work that all of my supporters at Patreon are happy with. I care about what my supporters want and so that's important to me. Feedback on this is going to be paramount to my success even beyond completing the challenge.

If you see my work and you like my work, let me know, call in [to Anchor] or write me all of the contact information is in the show notes. Check that out and let me know what you think. Today [is] day five, [I'm] a little behind, I've got four days to catch up on and what I don't catch up on in this month I'm going to just continue on into April to make sure that I can complete the challenge. Let me know what you think?

Savage Dungeons: Character Attributes

In the game, we need some way of describing your character, the fighter you will pretend to be. We can say the fighter is "strong, fairly nimble, not too smart"— but we need to describe the character a little better than that. We call these descriptions abilities.
-Dungeons & Dragons Players Manual

CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES

The Basic version of the game that I am mostly drawing inspiration from calls these character defining traits abilities. Since Savage Dungeons is a designed for use with Savage Worlds we can refer to these defining traits as attributes.

In Savage Dungeons every Basic Quickdraw Wildcard Character has 3-6 defining "Attributes."

[needle scratch]

WHAT? 3-6? what are you talking about? Savage Worlds has FIVE attributes! (see pg. 16 Savage Worlds Deluxe Edition)

Yes I am aware of the rules as written, but since Savage Dungeons has grown out of my home game which includes children ages 5, 8,10, 22, and "older than 22", I am experimenting with how minimal things can get and still work with Savage Worlds rules as written—remember the monster stat block experiment?  (I've been able to run a game quite well using only one die type to represent all attributes and skills for monsters.)

The basic set of attributes for Savage Dungeons are Strength, Agility, and Smarts. While they are broad categories that cover many different but related aspects of a character,  having only three makes it as easy for young players and extremely new players to keep track of what die they need to roll for a given task.

Strength defines how strong and durable your character is. The attributes of Strength and Vigor are both folded into the Strength attribute. Strength relates to physical actions such as forcing doors, fighting with melee weapons, physical endurance and resisting disease. Strength is the primary attribute for Fighter and Dwarf archetypes.

Agility describes how fast and physically coordinated your character is. Agility is quickness, movement, dexterity, and reflexes. Agility relates to actions such as dodging attacks, sneaking around quietly, picking locks, throwing objects, and shooting weapons. Agility is the primary attribute for the Thief and Halfling archetypes.

Smarts determines how smart, knowledgeable, and likable your character is. This attribute includes both Smarts and Spirit. Smarts relates to solving puzzles, remembering facts, telling convincing lies, using Magic and mental resistance. Smarts is the primary attribute for the Magic-user, Cleric, and Elf archetypes.

Since Savage Dungeons is trying to maintain the feel and flavor of the basic version of the original fantasy RPG, all the archetypes have fixed stats at the start of the game. So far this approach has worked well especially for players coming from a traditional F20 RPG background where the d20 does most of the rolling for attacks and skill checks and the concept of potentially rolling a different die type for each action can be as difficult to grasp as the classical dynamics of spinning tops.

What's your thoughts on this minimalist take on Savage Worlds attributes?

Free Map Friday - The Singing Stones

Long ago the Druids harnessed the power of the singing stones, channeling the energy of the land through them. Today that is all but a legend, fairy stories told to children at bedtime. But what if the stories were true? Recently sheep herders have been speaking in hushed rumors about strange music in the wind and shadows that move independently of the position of the sun...

This week I started a new regular feature for Patreon supporters, the "Living Terrain" series. Iv'e been expeimenting with modular 2.5D Print & Paste outdoor terrain and I think I have my final answer. I'm using a hex based system that can easily be configured and re-configured into just ablout any type of terrain that is required for the encounter. I was inspired to turn some of those tiles into a battlemap.

You can download this week's free map here.
I'd like to invite everyone to add to the narrative and send me your adventure ideas for this and all past and future maps. Let me know how you use it!

All Patreon supporters this month get the hi-res files of all maps as well as bonus content. Patrons at the $2.50+ level additionally get bonus versions with grids.

Mal Fisher, the Captain of the light freighter Bella LeGosi, claims to know the whereabouts of The Lady of Esparto, an ancient lost ship carrying treasure worth millions, and he is looking to hire a salvage crew. He wants to keep everything off the books as he is operating without the required paperwork. He has chosen not to apply for a salvage license for fear that a treasure as great as the Lady of Esparto will attract too much unwanted attention, increasing the likelihood of claim jumpers, pirates, and crooked authorities looking for an easy buck. He is offering a substantial amount of money and a percentage of the treasure for the completion of the job.

This bundle includes the Savage Worlds adventure and all the apropriately themed modular dungeon tile sets. Also included are grid versions and .jpg files for Virtual Tabletops.

Free Map Monday - Druid Meat, Foes to Beat: Samhain Surprise, Map 3

On Halloween each year, the children of Yellowbrick like to dress up as goblins and go trick-or-treating. A vicious tribe of goblins have learned of this strange human custom, and plan to use the opportunity to sneak into town for a little entertainment of their own. For tonight, only real monsters walk the streets, and they are about to give each other a nasty surprise.

Hidden below the surface world are mysteries man was not meant to discover. Ancient alien cities, monuments, and shrines that were once long forgotten, now have become home to new creatures. Recently rediscovered, the Shrine of the Vampire Beetle has become active once again.

I hope you find a home in your adventure for this map. Let me know how you use it and what story it tells.

My imagination is already at work with a tale about six petrified aliens, a combination lock puzzle and several traps. Oh, and don't forget the Vampire Beetles!

The door leading to the Lido Deck is locked and sealed shut; the lock has been damaged. When piece of space debris or a small asteroid collided with the glass roof, it punctured a hole, triggering the safety mechanism that sealed off the Lido Deck to prevent depressurization of the rest of the ship. The door will have to be forced open or the lock repaired...
